Client Ask: Cornerstone was asked by the VCU Health System to design a new Gift Shop and Childern’s Hospital retail Pharmacy in a new retail space on Broad Street. This was to be a “Fast Track” or accelerated project, as the Children’s hospital had just opened and they needed the pharmacy to be “online” as soon as possible.
Challenge: We had to determine how to combine two very different functions: a larger public gift shop and a back of the house (plus all the security required for a pharmacy) in order to create the children’s pharmacy. Our timing challenge was that both functions have extensive fixture, IT, infrastructure and security requirements that needed to be constantly coordinated throughout the design and construction process.
Our Solution: Cornerstone’s interior team rose to the challenge and conducted weekly meetings with all VCU’s user groups, the fixture vendors and the MEP engineers, WSP to help ensure a smooth and constant exchange of information. The entire project was completed in 6 months from the notice to proceed to the certificate of occupancy. The new Retail Pharmacy and Gift Shop is a welcome addition for busy mothers and hospital visitors to the VCU Children’s Hospital of Richmond Pavillion (CHORP).
